Phil Differ - Writer & Director

Multi award-winning Writer/Producer/Director, Phil Differ started writing comedy in the 80s for shows such as Not the Nine O’Clock News, Spitting Image and A Kick Up the Eighties.

He joined the BBC as an Assistant Producer/Script Editor, working on shows such as City Lights and Rab C. Nesbitt before going onto produce Naked Radio, Naked Video, Scotch and Wry and create Only an Excuse?

After fifteen years with BBC Scotland, having reached the position of Senior Producer, Phil left to become a Director of the independent production company The Comedy Unit which went to make shows like Watson’s Wind Up, Chewin’ the Fat and Still Game.

In a career spanning 45 years, Phil has worked with such stars as Robbie Coltrane, Gregor Fisher, Elaine C. Smith, Rikki Fulton, Tony Roper, Craig Ferguson, Gerard Kelly, Greg Hemphill, Ford Kiernan, Karen Dunbar and Jonathan Watson.

In 2018 Phil was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Glasgow Caledonian University for services to comedy writing. As well as a tv/radio producer and playwright, Phil is also a stand up-comedian whose first novel, set in the world of stand-up comedy, is due for publication in Spring 2027.

Raymond Mearns as Danny O'Hara

Raymond Mearns is one of the UK’s busiest circuit comics and can be seen regularly performing at venues all across the country and frequently on the International Comedy Circuit

Successful Edinburgh Festival Fringe shows every year from 2011 till 2026 have shown Raymond’s considerable ability to keep his stand-up fresh, relevant and most of all extremely funny.

Described by Frankie Boyle as ‘a genuine improvisational genius’, Raymond is universally regarded as one of the best and most consistent comedians in the land.

All the while he has also balanced his comedy career to incorporate work as a character actor in film and TV, with roles in “Rab C Nesbitt”, “ScotSquad”, “River City”, “Limmy’s Show” and “Legit'” amongst many others.

Raymond is a regular panellist on the BBC Scotland satirical comedy show “Breaking the News”, where he has won plaudits and picked up a whole new fan base by combining erudition with his considerable comic talent to create a unique voice and many memorable moments on this ground breaking show which is recorded in front of a live audience.

Bruce Morton as Pat McDavitt

Scotland’s acclaimed comic, storyteller and social commentator was a founder of the Funny Farm Comedy Collective which, in 1989, helped kickstart the Scottish stand-up scene. UK attention soon followed for Bruce, and he began writing and performing his own C4 shows, Shoe Fetishist’s Guide and the series Sin with Bruce Morton. Milestones along the way include a Perrier Nomination at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, two UK tours and a critically acclaimed one-man show Blood Below the Window. The show was subsequently adapted as a BBC Radio 4 afternoon drama.

A master of the anecdote, the short gag and the shaggy dog tale, Bruce is a popular headline act at comedy clubs across the country and is a regular showstopper at the Stand Comedy Club. He memorably appeared in the hit BBC sitcom “Still Game” as creepy undertaker “ID Sheathing” and more recently appeared in the 2022 series of BBC comedy “Scot Squad”.

about the play

Pat and Danny are two Celtic supporting childhood pals now in their early seventies, older men who view life through a green and white prism. They live in the past, they resent everyone under thirty and manage to find negatives in everything their team achieves. They are what’s disparagingly known as Celtic Da’s.

A recent health scare results in Pat experiencing a lapse in his football lifetime spent as a Celtic fan.

A confused Danny cannot understand his pal’s sudden mood swing and gradually their long-standing match day routine becomes the backdrop to a darkly comedic discourse where they both come to question their Celtic-mindedness, their politics, their hopes, dreams, fears, values and above all else, their evolution from young and gallus into Celtic Da’s.
